NIST RELEASES STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR SMART GRID.  The National Institute of Standards and Technology today identified about 80 standards that it says need to be developed to enable interconnected devices and systems that will form the nationwide smart grid. The proposed standards are included in a draft report that will be available at http://www.nist.gov/smartgrid for 30 days for public comment.  Among the issues raised in the report is the need to ensure that customers’ access to information at the utility is "separate from the utility access to the home to manage power grid operations" and that, more generally, security is maintained for any smart grid application "that provides an interface between the Public Internet and the utility networks."
